Amy Macdonald thought and felt outside the box when she released her debut album, This is the Life. Her music draws inspiration from those who have created a huge following, like Pete Doherty of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fran Healy of Travis, Ewan McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Her uniqueness is seen on her first single, Run, that takes on a sad, melancholy tone in the lyrics but is expressed in an upbeat rhythm. In Mr. Rock & Roll, Macdonald sings in her high, bell-clear, gutsy vocal with a compelling rhythmic punch.
The song Footballer’s Wife takes ominous strings, thunderous drums and a haunting vocal. The trumpet-laden, atmospheric track Let’s Start a Band is simple, but has a powerful punch. It talks about following and being with a band because, as Macdonald puts it, “When you’re a teenager, that’s all that matters.”
This is the Life is available in CDs at Astrovision, Odyssey, Music One and Fully Booked and at fliptunesplus.net.
