Inspired by the charitable projects of her mom, Rose Marie "Baby" Arenas (through the Father Pio Lend-A-Hand Foundation which she chairs), Rachel Arenas launched her own community-service program called H.E.L.Ps. (Health, Education and Livelihood for Pangasinenses) in Nancapian, Malasiqui, Pangasinan, where Baby owns a mango farm.
"I am impressed by her civic-mindedness," said Robin Padilla of Rachel. (She calls him Binoy and he calls her babes.) "That’s why I’m giving her my all-out support."
Robin was the special guest at the affair which was kicked off by a motorcade early in the morning, passing through several towns and cities, and included visits to the public markets, with thousands of Pangasinenses (most of whom are beneficiaries of H.E.L.Ps.) participating.
"I have to carry on my mom’s mission," said Rachel who took courses at Harvard and earned a M.A. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. "And the best place to start it is in Pangasinan, her native province."
H.E.L.Ps. has so far established several livelihood programs and facilitated access to basic services for the poor through medical missions and relief/assistance programs, as well as provided grants for several skill-building and training opportunities to indigents.
"These programs are designed to enhance their chances for gainful employment," said Rachel.
Highlight of the affair was the blessing of a multi-purpose hall at the Arenases’ farm, which will serve as venue of H.E.L.Ps. activities. Joining Robin as special guests were Pangasinan Vice Gov. and Mrs. Oscar Lambino, Malasiqui Mayor and Mrs. Alfonso Soriano, Sta. Barbara Mayor Jinky Zaplan and San Carlos Vice Mayor Ayoy Resuello.
