Jinggoy Estrada hospitalized after knee ‘snap’

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Jinggoy Estrada was brought to the hospital on Wednesday, August 26, following a reported knee injury in his detention cell.

Estrada is currently at Cardinal Santos Medical Center for his scheduled knee X-ray. He was seen being aided by personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology while walking toward the hospital.

Initial reports said that Estrada’s knee snapped while taking a bath.

However, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology spokesperson Jayrex Bustinera debunked the initial reports, saying that Estrada’s knee snapped while preparing for his court-mandated check-up.

“Habang nagpe-prepare siya kaninang umaga, around 11:30 a.m., naglalakad, may nag-snap. Sabi niya, may tumunog sa tuhod niya. May nag-snap at sobrang sakit,” Bustinera said.

(While he was getting ready earlier this morning, around 11:30 a.m., he was walking when something popped. He said something clicked in his knee, there was a popping sound, and it was extremely painful.)

Estrada has a pre-existing medical condition of osteoarthritis and joint effusion in both knees.

On August 24, the Sandiganbayan 5th Division allowed Estrada to undergo a medical examination at Cardinal Santos Medical Center due to his knee condition.

Estrada was arrested on June 1, 2026, on charges of plunder and graft.

The charges stem from alleged P573 million in illicit payouts from flood control projects.
