Belgium eyes Cebu as key hub for trade, maritime ties

CEBU, Philippines — Belgium is increasing its economic engagement in the Visayas, identifying Cebu as a key hub for expanding trade, maritime cooperation and research partnerships as the two countries mark 80 years of diplomatic relations.

The move reflects Belgium’s bid to strengthen commercial ties with the Philippines beyond Metro Manila, with Cebu emerging as a focal point for collaboration in logistics, port development, sustainability and higher education.

Speaking during Belgium’s National Day celebration in Cebu, Belgian Ambassador Vladislava Iordanova said the province has become one of Belgium’s “most dynamic partners” in the country, citing growing cooperation across both the public and private sectors.

The renewed engagement follows the recent visit of Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, the first by a Belgian foreign minister to the Philippines in more than three decades. The visit reaffirmed Belgium’s commitment to expanding economic cooperation with the Philippines and strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia.

Maritime cooperation remains central to the partnership. Belgium is working with Philippine stakeholders, including Port of Antwerp-Bruges International, on projects covering port development, logistics, maritime education and sustainable coastal management. The initiatives are aimed at improving supply chain efficiency and supporting long-term infrastructure development.

Belgium is also expanding collaboration in water management and climate resilience through academic partnerships. The CarAqCoL program links the University of San Carlos with the University of Mons and UCLouvain to develop sustainable water management solutions, while a Belgian academic mission focused on hydro-economics and circular economy is scheduled to visit Cebu in October.

According to the Ambassador, the embassy plans to deepen engagement through the “Belgian Days in the Visayas in 2027,” bringing together government agencies, businesses and universities to explore opportunities in trade, investment, innovation and research.

Held on July 21, 2026, at Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, the National Day event hosted by Honorary Consul Enrison Benedicto brought together government officials, business leaders and academics, underscoring Cebu’s expanding role in Belgium’s economic engagement with the Philippines. — (FREEMAN)
