Palace extends P150,000 aid to families of 3 slain Tacloban students

MANILA, Philippines — Families of three slain students in the Tacloban school shooting incident are set to receive P150,000 in financial aid from the Office of the President, Malacañang announced.
The wounded students, meanwhile, will receive P50,000 each.
The announcement was made by Palace Press Officer Claire Castro during a press briefing on Wednesday, July 1, amid the ongoing Senate investigation into the incident.
“Hindi man maibabalik ang buhay na nawala, hatid ng pangulo ang lubos na pakikiramay at mahigit P1 million na tulong pinansyal sa pamilya ng mga nasawi at nasugatang estudyante sa pamamaril sa San Jose National High School sa Tacloban,” Castro said.
(Although the lives lost cannot be brought back, the President extended his deepest condolences and more than P1 million in financial assistance to the families of the students who died and were injured in the shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban.)
Castro noted that the financial aid from the president is different from the assistance provided by other government agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Grief heard, justice assured
Malacañang said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. heard the grief and the appeal of the parents of the three students who lost their lives in the incident to impose harsher penalties on the suspects, who are both minors.
Some parents spoke at the Senate hearing, expressing their appeal to authorities to amend the law to make both suspects criminally liable. Only the 15-year-old alias "Rod," who fired a single shot, was facing criminal charges, while authorities are still determining the liability of the 14-year-old alias "Nash," who fired over 30 shots and even changed magazines.
However, Castro also explained that under the law, children in conflict with the law are committed to DSWD facilities for their reformation and rehabilitation, instead of being placed in regular prison cells for adults.
“Ang intervention na ito ang pinapatupad ng batas para sa mga children in conflict with the law,” Castro said, directly addressing the parents. “Pero sisiguruhin ang administrasyon ni Pangulong Marcos Jr. na makakamit ninyo ang hustisya.”
(This intervention is required by law for children in conflict with the law. But the administration of President Marcos will make sure that you will obtain justice.)
