At least P5.4 million purse awaits Alex
MANILA, Philippines — Wimbledon is still days away but Alex Eala is already looking at a hefty guaranteed purse as the first Filipina player in history to be seeded in the main draw.
Eala, who will come into the queen of grass tournaments as the No. 29 seed, is assured of at least $89,000 or more than P5.4 million with her first-round appearances in both singles and doubles.
The 21-year-old Filipina is guaranteed $80,000 in the singles’ Round of 128 and $9,000 in the doubles’ Round of 64.
Her opponent in the singles will be determined in the official draw this weekend as well as in doubles, where she will team up with WTA No. 46 Nikola Bartunkova of Czechia.
Wimbledon is set June 29 to July 12 in London with Eala hoping for her first Grand Slam breakthrough in an impressive grass season so far.
Eala first partnered with Bartunkova in a 4-6, 6-2, 9-11 defeat to the second-seeded British pair of Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden in the WTA125 Birmingham Open earlier this week.
It’s the same tournament Eala won, ironically against the 20-year-old Bartunkova, for her second overall pro crown and first in grass. The win snapped Eala’s erstwhile 0-13 record against Czech players.
