MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala had an early exit from the Bad Homburg Open after falling against Elise Mertens, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round early Tuesday morning (Manila time) in Germany.

Coming off a semifinal exit in the Berlin Open just a couple of days ago, Eala had her earliest exit in a grass court thus far.

She had a strong start in the match, going up 3-1 in the first set after breaking Mertens’ serve.

But that was the only game won by the Filipina for some time, as Mertens strung together eight straight games to take a 6-3 win in the first set and a 3-0 lead in the second.

The World No. 30 Filipina was able to recover, closing the gap 1-3, but Mertens continued to keep her opponent at arm’s length.

And while the pride of the Philippines was able to inch closer, it was not enough as the World No. 26 slammed the door on her opponent.

While she has bowed out of singles’ action, Eala will be teaming up with Venus Williams in doubles’ play. They will take on Alexandra Osborne and Catherine Harrison in the Round of 16.
