MANILA, Philippines — World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura will clash with the best the country can offer in a different kind of chess as he sees action in today’s inaugural WR Bughouse Championship at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in BGC, Taguig.

“Good morning from Manila,” said Nakamura via social media upon arrival in the country early yesterday. “Through chess, I’ve been able to travel around the world, and this is now the 63rd unique country I’ve been to.”

Nakamura will pair with German Wadim Rosenstein, founder of the organizing WR Chess that has put up a total cash pot of $100,000, or a whopping P6.1 million, in this bizarre chess, more known as transfer chess.

A total of 52 teams of two have registered including 13 foreign participants eyeing the top purse of $50,000. World No. 34 Awonder Liang, also of the United States, has entered along with GMs Anton Smirnov of Australia and American Timur Gareyev, and Indonesian GM Novendra Priasmoro and WGM Ardhiani Anastasia.
