CEBU, Philippines — Four people were killed and 11 others were injured after a multicab collided with a delivery truck on the national highway in Barangay Kanyuko, Dumanjug yesterday afternoon.

The fatalities were identified as Mary-Ann Quirante, 27; Jenifer Lopez, 28; Harvey Lopez, 4; and Oliver Lopez, 9, all residents of Barangay Tubod-Dugoan, Dumanjug, Cebu.

Those injured were Zoraida Quirante, 54; Mark Quirante, 10; Jade Padillo, 11; Jemar Lopez, 10; Raymond Quirante, 32; Jessa Mae Lopez, 1; Quinn Avenry Alpuerto, 3; James Lopez, 9; Cristina Turnos, 3; Sarah Mae Turnos, 10; and Saulo Quirante, 59, driver of the multicab.

Police Inspector Gilfred Baroman, chief of Dumanjug Police Station, said that the multicab came from Barili while the delivery truck driven by Jolito Cuyos, 40, resident of Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City, was on its way to Cebu City.

Baroman said the truck driver claimed that the multicab was running in a zigzag motion, prompting him to stop.

“Matud sa driver nga nag-ekis ekis na daw ni ang multicab maong ni execute siya og full stop although naghunong kay na-lose control man ang multicab og gibanga ang delivery truck,” said Baroman.

Baroman said that based on their investigation, the multicab driver was under the influence of liquor. The victims allegedly came from a beach outing in Barili.

“Accident-prone gyod ni siya nga area,” Baroman said.

In fact, the police have already installed warning signs in the area to prevent accident.

The truck driver is now detained at the Dumanjug Police Station. He will be facing criminal complaints for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and physical injuries.

The multicab driver will likely face the same charges as well as a charge for driving under the influence of liquor. (FREEMAN)
