Group offers free vasectomy

CEBU, Philippines — An international team of physicians is offering a free no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Cebu City.

The No Scalpel Vasectomy International Inc. (NSVI), with a team of foreign doctors, will conduct the modern no needle, no scalpel vasectomy mission for eight days, starting tomorrow, February 13, until the 20th.

The group has been providing free modern vasectomy since 2001, and will also shoulder the expenses of the medicines, anesthetics, medical supplies, including the “income replacement” assistance to those NSV patient with low income (for the two to three days no heavy work/lifting.

NSV is a modern method of delivery, ligation and excision of vas deference without use of a knife. It provides a permanent sterilization option for male.

This is seen to address poverty and overpopulation.

Social worker Frohnie Cagalitan, NSVI coordinator, said the modern vasectomy is safe, less costly and more convenient family planning method for married couples.

NSV, she said, is a permanent contraception that does not interfere with a man's masculinity and sex drive, few of the myths that are now being corrected through massive information/awareness drives.

"We would like to eradicate the common misconceptions like mausab na daw ilang sex performance because that's absolutely not true. We want to educate people to dispel misconceptions" she said.

The procedure is simple and takes only 10 to 15 minutes. The healing period would take up to three days.

She said they are targeting couples who have at least two children to benefit from the mission.
