Bulusan acting up anew
LEGAZPI CITY , Philippines – At least 46 volcanic quakes were recorded around Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon in the past three days, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to conduct a 24-hour watch.
Crispulo Diolata, Phivolcs-Sorsogon resident volcanologist, said the Cabid-An monitoring station recorded 16 earthquakes yesterday, 20 on Tuesday and 10 on Monday.
Diolata said a team of scientists from the Phivolcs office in Manila is conducting a ground deformation survey on the volcano.
“Although the team is merely conducting regular ground deformation survey, their presence in Sorsogon is timely because Bulusan is showing abnormal behavior,” Diolata told The STAR.
He said increased volcanic quakes indicate that Bulusan is having hydrothermal processes that may lead to steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.
Diolata reiterated the warning of Phivolcs to the public not to enter the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
Bulusan spewed ash up to 1.5 kilometers high in November.
