Mandaue City Council denies homeowners’ request for toll

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City Council has denied the request of the officers of a subdivision to allow them to collect toll from heavy equipment and truck operators entering the subdivision for road maintenance.

The council committee on transportation and public utilities did approve the request of the Greenhills Homeowners Association because the property is owned by the city government.

According to the City Council, the road inside the subdivision was donated by then governor Emilio Osmeña to the city in 1975. The donation was accepted by then mayor Demetrio Cortes.

"The committee politely recommends for the denial of the Greenhills Homeowners Association petition to impose fees for heavy equipment and truck passing the roads," the committee report reads.

The subdivision used to collect P50 toll for six-wheeler and P100 for heavy equipment entering the subdivision.

City Council stopped the illegal collection in 2010, prompting the homeowners to seek the approval of the city. (FREEMAN)
