To dispose of garbage: CH to make another emergency purchase

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government is making another emergency procurement to dispose of the garbage from the transfer station at the South Road Properties.

This after its contract with Jomara Konstruckt has already expired last December 31. Pending a new contract of private hauler, the city government has temporarily stopped dumping garbage at the SRP.

Department of Public Services assistant head John Paul Gelasque said it is part of the city government's commitment to the Environmental Management Bureau to stop the operation of the transfer station.

Gelasque said they are waiting for instruction from Mayor Tomas Osmeña where to dispose of the garbage. Osmeña was scheduled to arrive last night from a six-day vacation leave in Japan.

Gelasque, however, said the previous hauler will still collect the garbage from January 1 until yesterday considering that it has started late of its contract.

Jomara only started hauling garbage on December 28 instead of December 23 after the City Council approved the P9.2 million budget for emergency procurement.

Gelasque said the contractor hauled the garbage to a transfer station it rented from Edwin Ortiz and Ema Ramas in Inayawan. Gelasque clarified that the city government has nothing to do with the transfer station rented by Jomara.

"Kini siya nga transfer station mao ni siya ang gi-rent sa Jomara," Gelasque said.

Gelasque said the remaining 25 to 30 percent of the garbage are still to be collected from the SRP transfer station.

He said the remaining garbage will be hauled by the winning bidder this month.

Gelasque said they have yet to determine how much the city government will pay Jomara for the services it rendered for three days.

He said the computation will be based on the rate at the private landfill in Consolacion.

"Depende pana sa na-haul nila but rest assured nga dili gyud na mahurot, pero depende pa gyud na sa billing," Gelasque said. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
