Ateneo squads take early lead in Inter-School jungolf

MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo gained the headstart in its expected duel with La Salle Zobel, taking command in both brackets of the juniors division at the start recently of the JGFP Inter-School Golf Championships at the Splendido Taal Golf and Country Club in Tagaytay.

Carl Corpus fired 53 points, Karl dela Torre carded 44 and Marc Corrales 42 as Ateneo 1 edged La Salle Zobel, 139-138, in the opening hostilities of Juniors 1. LS-Zobel was led by the 51 of Aniceto Mandanas.

Xavier was a far third at 129.

Ateneo also paced Juniors 2 with a 131 from Riggs Illescas’ 49, Santino Dikono’s  42 and either of the 40s of Maio Castaneda and Miggs Roque.

La Salle Zobel was 12 poins behind at 119 and La Salle Greenhills third at 105 in the multi-division series organized by the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines.

Girls action saw La Salle Zobel leading group 1 and Ateneo ahead in groups 2 and 3.

The competitions resume today with the Juniors 1 and 2 at Beverly Place in Pampanga, the Girls 1,2 and 3, Peewee and College at Southlinks and Aspirants 1&2 at Sherwood Hills.

In individual play, Corpus led Mandanas by 2 in Juniors 1, Sean Jean Ramos of DLSZ was ahead by 3 over Harry Back in Juniors 2, Miko Granada of DLSZ up by 5 over Jaime Alabastro of Ateneo in Aspirants 2, Zachary Castro of Bloomfield Academy leading Jet Ang of Xavier by 12 in Aspirants 1.
