Mild El Niño expected in March – PAGASA

Jessa Agua - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A mild El Niño is expected to come along when summer enters in March, says the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration.

PAGASA Visayas chief Oscar Tabada said there is a 50 to 60 percent chance of El Niño to happen.

El Niño, characterized by unusually warm temperature, is the disruption of the ocean-atmosphere system in the Tropical Pacific having important consequences for weather and climate around the globe.

The El Niño was earlier predicted to enter at the first quarter of the year but recent data has showed that this will most likely occur mid this year.

Meanwhile, northeast monsoon or amihan has been causing cold breeze in Cebu and neighboring provinces. It has also brought rains in the past days.

While no major weather disturbance is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this month, the public is advised against occasional thunderstorms that may occur, especially during the celebration of Valentine’s Day this weekend.  (FREEMAN)
