UP, Ateneo exam results out

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines (UP) and the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) have released their respective lists of high school students who have been accepted for the next schoolyear, which will start in August.

Out of the record-breaking 87,000 applicants, who took the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT), the university on Monday night released a list of around 15,000 names, which included qualifiers as well as those who have pending cases, waitlisted to a degree program with an available slot, and those who are qualified but have to clear deficiencies before the UP Office of Admissions.

“Official UPCAT results are posted at the Office of Admissions and each examinee will receive official notification by mail,” said UP in its announcement.

“Should any discrepancy in reporting exist, the information contained in the mailed notification shall take precedence over the results posted on the Web,” it added.

The number of students in the list is higher than the over 13,000 who qualified for admission to the university last year.

The passers were qualified to join over 170 programs in UP’s seven constituent universities – Diliman (with an extension program in Pampanga), Baguio, Los Baños, Manila (with Schools of Health Sciences in Baler, Palo, and Koronadal), Visayas (with campuses in Iloilo/Miagao and Tacloban) Mindanao, and the Open University – and an autonomous college in Cebu.

The Diliman campus offers the largest number of degree programs, while other campuses are known for specific areas of specializations.

UPCAT, which is administered annually in August, consists of four subtests – Language Proficiency, Science, Mathematics and Reading Comprehension.

Based on information on the UPCAT website, “standardized scores on the subtests are combined with the weighted average of final grades in the first three years of high school to determine qualification into UP.”

“Moreover, to implement the policy of democratization to make the UP studentry more representative of the nation’s population, socio-economic and geographic considerations are factored in the selection of campus qualifiers,” it added.

In case of failure to qualify in his or her preferred campus, the examinee is advised to try in other UP campuses or enroll in a different college and transfer to UP after earning 33 academic units.

Initial list

Meanwhile, ADMU on Friday released an initial list of those who passed the Ateneo College Entrance Test (ACET).

An online search of the results, “based on the unofficial list of accepted and waitlisted applicants,” was also accessible at the ADMU website (http://ls.ateneo.edu/acet_results.php).

The total number of passers was not released by the university, but it said that over 17,000 examinees took the test last year.

A last ACET for applicants hoping to enter the Loyola Schools (the Ateneo de Manila’s college unit) as college freshmen and transferees in August 2015 is set for Jan. 17. These applicants will bring the total number of applicants for SY 2015-2016 to over 20,000.

On Friday, the university released a list of 250 “best of the best” applicants who will receive scholarships from the university.

Forty applicants were selected as Ateneo Freshman Merit Scholars, who will receive full tuition and fees grant for any undergraduate degree of their choice.

Another 10 applicants from public or state-supported high schools will be awarded the San Ignacio de Loyola Merit Scholarship for Public High School Students, who will also receive full tuition and fees grant.

“These students must have distinguished themselves in both academic and co-curricular involvement in their respective high schools and more importantly, show the potential to become future leaders and catalysts for national development,” said the university.

The remaining 200 top applicants will be included in the director’s list and shall enjoy an annual P50,000 scholarship grant for any undergraduate course of his or her choice.
