(UPDATE) Magnitude 5.7 earthquake hits Antique

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the town of Culasi in the central Philippine province of Antique at 4:05 p.m. local time today, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

PHIVOLCS said the tremor is expected to cause damage and aftershocks.

The epicenter of the quake was determined to be 11.42 degrees north latitude and 122.10 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 14 kilometers.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activities. There are about 20 to 25 earthquakes occurring in the country everyday, most of them not felt by the general populace.
