Mayweather protecting record, says Pacquiao

Dino Maragay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – For Manny Pacquiao, it is clear why Floyd Mayweather is not too keen on fighting him in a bout that’s already long overdue.

It’s because of Mayweather fearing to lose his undefeated record.

Pacquiao recently spoke to the Star-Ledger about Mayweather – a topic he would rather avoid nowadays – explaining why a much-anticipated fight between them remains elusive.

“Why he will not fight me? Well, I think he is worried about his record. He talks about his zero losses. The zero that means so much to him means nothing when measured against who he fought,” Pacquiao said, referring to Mayweather immaculate 46-0 card.

The fighting congressman is currently in the US to promote his fight with American Chris Algieri, but, as expected, was faced with the familiar question about Mayweather.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum previously expressed optimism that the megabuck fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao could finally happen early next year. Pacquiao, for his part, once again challenged Mayweather to agree to it.

"You talk pound-for-pound best, or undefeated champion. If you don’t defend against the best, none of that means anything," said Pacquiao.

Mayweather will take on Marcos Maidana in a rematch on September 13, after which he’ll get the chance to once again go for Pacquiao, provided the Filipino gets past Algieri.

Pacquiao went on to confidently state he knows how to deal with the elusive Mayweather. Even his trainer Freddie Roach thinks Pacquiao will knock out the unbeaten American.

"I know how to fight him. I know what I’m doing. I know what his style is all about. So, if he don’t want to create action I know how to create action. I know that I can make him stand and fight,” he explained.

This, Pacquiao believes, is what’s keeping Mayweather from getting in the ring with him.

"[Mayweather is afraid] not of fighting, but perhaps of what one night could do to his zero of losses. I think I finally understand him," he said.
