Blaze hits Ifugao public market

Victor Martin, Charlie Lagasca - The Philippine Star

LAMUT, Ifugao, Philippines – More than 80 stalls at a public market here were destroyed in a fire that broke out shortly before midnight Friday.

The blaze, which started at around 11:50 p.m., quickly spread to stalls mostly containing combustible materials such as dry goods, groceries and farm supplies.

Abelardo Batton, municipal fire marshal, said the fire spread to a stall selling liquefied petroleum gas, which aggravated the nearly six-hour blaze.

The fire was put out at around 5:30 a.m. yesterday, authorities said.

Market administrator Jet Jose Lumauig said not a single item was saved from the fire as stores were locked during the conflagration. No casualties or injuries were reported.

As of press time, authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze as well as the cost of damage, which was estimated at P5 million.
