Cayanan rips junior mark in Japan swimming meet

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Swimming League (PSL) standout Paula Cayanan bagged two gold medals in the 2014 West Shizuoka Swimming Championships held in Honshu, Japan.

Cayanan, a multi-gold medalist in the Palarong Pambansa, dominated the girls’ 50-meter freestyle event in 27.44 seconds. She surpassed the 27.86-second national junior record Heidi Ong established in 2002.

The 15-year-old Cayanan continued her impressive showing by topping the 100m freestyle class in one minute, 0.55 seconds.

Cayanan was part of the PSL team that won 50 golds, 42 silvers and 30 bronzes in the 2013 Singapore International Age Group Swimming Championships held at the Singapore Island Country Club where she won a total of nine golds.

Meanwhile, the PhiliSwimming bets remained medall-less after two days of the second Southeast Asian Championships at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore.

Jessie Khing Lacuna, Hannah Dato, Franz Marquez and Axel Toni Seeven Ngui failed to make it to the top three in their respective events.

Lacuna placed fifth in the men’s 200m freestyle (1:52.52), 200m butterfly (2:07.35) and 200m individual medley (2:08.34).

Dato wound up fourth in the women’s 50m butterfly (28.76) and seventh in the 100m freestyle (59.19) and 400m freestyle (4:29.86).

Marquez ended up seventh in the men’s 200m IM (2:16.68) and 10th in the 200m freestyle (2:01.98).

Ngui was sixth in the men’s 200m freestyle (1:57.09).
