17-year-old robbery suspect surrenders

CEBU, Philippines - Allegedly unable to support himself, a 17-year-old boy who escaped from a prison cell in Cebu surrendered  to police in Bacolod City on Friday.

The robbery suspect (name being withheld for being a minor) escaped from prison last April while police were processing his release since the complainant reportedly chose not to file a case against him.

Sr. Insp. Argel Ancheta, Bacolod City police chief, said the teenager surrendered at the police station and revealed his robbery case in Cebu. Ancheta called up Cebu Provincial Intelligence Branch chief Rodulfo Albotra, Jr., who confirmed the matter.

The suspect narrated to the police that after escaping, he went home and managed to go to Iloilo after he was given money by his parents for a plane ticket. At Iloilo, he then took a ride for Bacolod City.

“Nahurot na ang dala niyang kwarta then wala siya’y kaila. Nakonsensiya na pud kuno siya unya gikapoy na maong ni-decide siya nga mu-surrender,” Ancheta said.

Medellin Police chief, Chief Insp. Fructuoso Lim said the suspect’s return can now shed light on the allegation of the suspect’s parents that their son was being treated as an errand boy at the police station.

“Puro to pamakak ilaha. Karon maklaro na gyud ang kamatuoran. Kahibaw na man g’yud na sila kung asa ilang anak under their supervision,” Lim said.

The suspect’s father, for his part, denied financing his son to escape, saying that they were even surprised to have learned that he was in Bacolod City.

The suspect is expected to arrive today accompanied by Medellin Police.  (FREEMAN)
