Magat Dam water level still below normal – NIA

Charlie Lagasca - The Philippine Star

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines   â€“ The water level of Magat Dam, one of the major sources of power in the Luzon grid, has remained below the normal level amid the continued heat, according to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA).

As of noon yesterday, NIA engineer Saturnino Tenedor, also the dam’s instrumentation, flood forecasting and warning section chief, said the water level was at 167.3 meters, still below the normal level.

The dam’s reported normal level should be no less than 183 meters. The three-decade-old dam had its all-time low of 149 meters in July 1991.

However, reports said, the water level at the dam’s reservoir along the Isabela-Ifugao border is still enough to generate power for the Luzon grid.

Reports said the demand for irrigation from the dam’s service areas were not that high since the harvest season in most farms is still ongoing, enabling the dam to generate electricity despite its water level still below normal.
