Duterte turns down calls to run for president
DAVAO CITY , Philippines – For the nth time, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has turned down calls for him to run in the presidential election in 2016.
“It’s a no, no, no. I am not and will never run for president. I am not qualified for the office,†Duterte said, adding he will never be tempted to seek the highest office of the land.
“The presidency is a crucifixion and I am not interesed,†he added.
Several groups have reportedly been trying to persuade the Davao mayor to run in the 2016 presidential elections, promising to support him all the way in the fight. Even netizens are urging him to give the presidency a try.
Former Presidents Fidel Ramos, Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo were reported to have asked Duterte to head their justice, defense, interior and local government departments and the Bureau of Customs (BOC). Duterte said he turned them all down.
President Aquino offered Duterte the interior and local government post when he assumed office in 2010.
He said those pushing him to run for the presidency would surely regret it if he wins, as he would declare martial law and abolish offices such as the BOC to rid the government of corruption.
