Troops on high alert for CPP 45th anniversary

MANILA, Philippines - The military will remain on “high alert” to thwart any atrocity by communist rebels, who are celebrating their 45th anniversary Thursday.

Armed Forces public affairs chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said there was no change in their alert status but troops on the ground remain vigilant to protect the communities from threats.

“We will remain on high alert. Our personnel will continue to maintain active defense of our installations in the event of an attack by the NPA (New People’s Army),” Zagala said in a text message.

“Likewise, we will continue with our peace and development work in the countryside,” he added.

Officials previously said the rebels usually commemorate the anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) by staging attacks. The NPA is the armed wing of the CPP, which was founded on December 26, 1968.

CPP said it would kick-off its 45th anniversary celebration through flag-raising rites in areas that it claims to be “under the jurisdiction and authority of the organs of the people’s democratic government.”

In a statement, the group said the celebration would start with the raising of its hammer and sickle flag and the singing of the “Internationale,” the anthem of the international communist movement.

The flags of the National Democratic Front, the NPA and other revolutionary mass organizations will also be flown high in assembly areas.

“Tens of thousands of people are expected to join scores of assemblies to be held in various parts of the country. Most of the people will arrive at the assembly points on foot, coming in from nearby barrios and towns,” CPP said.

The government has declared a holiday truce with communist rebels that took effect last Dec. 21 and will last until Jan. 15. Before that, the CPP approved a shorter truce to be implemented from Dec. 24 to 26 and from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2.

The military said it would not be complacent even if the ceasefire has been declared.

“The NPA rebels have consistently shown their contempt for any declaration of cessation of hostilities during the holidays. We cannot trust them to not attempt an attack on government during these times,” Zagala said.

He also scored the CPP for declaring a short ceasefire despite calls to end conflict and violence.

“This only goes to show that their (CPP) call for peace is merely lip service and their true intention is far more sinister and violent,” Zagala said.

The strength of the communist movement in the country stands at about 4,000 based on latest military estimates.
