Floyd says Manny could be next foe
MANILA, Philippines - Believe it or not, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has mentioned Manny Pacquiao as his possible opponent in May 2014.
Mayweather, still undefeated inside the ring, will fight on May 3 in Las Vegas but hasn’t named his opponent. Insiders say it will be Amir Khan.
But in an interview with the Las Vegas Examiner, Mayweather mentioned the name of Pacquiao when just days ago he said he’s not fighting the Filipino star.
“My focus is May third, I don’t know who my opponent may be. If it’s Pacquiao, it’s Pacquiao. If it’s Amir Khan, it’s Amir Khan,†said the flamboyant American boxer.
Pacquiao recently being named by the WBC as the No. 1 contender to Mayweather’s throne only fueled talks of their super fight finally taking place next year.
But still others believe the fight is light years away from happening – not until Pacquiao is with Top Rank and Mayweather is under Golden Boy and his own Mayweather Promotions.
“For 17 years they’ve been putting guys in front of me and I’ve been beating them. So come May, they’ll put a guy in front of me, I’ll go to training camp, work hard, and the results will be the same,†Mayweather added.
If the WBC gives Mayweather the ultimatum to defend his welterweight crown with Pacquiao, the 36-year-old pound-for-pound king may opt to vacate the title.
