Turkey slams failure to tackle Syrian refugees crisis

ANKARA (Xinhua) - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Saturday slammed the failure of the international community to tackle the Syrian refugees crisis, urging the UN Security Council to act quickly on this human tragedy.

Speaking at a joint press conference with the visiting Bulgarian Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin in the Turkish capital of Ankara, Davutoglu said "we are doing what our humanitarian and moral responsibilities necessitate, but unfortunately the international community has failed in this issue."

The Turkish foreign minister said that the issue of Syria refugees and the tragedy regarding Syrian civilians were the saddest outcomes of the Syrian crisis, adding that Turkey is one of the leading countries in approaching the situation most responsibly and generously.  

"The scene we are facing is beyond all imagination," said Davutoglu, reminding that the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey has reached 600,000.  

Davutoglu added that Turkey has an initiative to bring up the issue of Syrian refugees at a planned international peace conference in Switzerland's Geneva city, dubbed as "Geneva II".

For his part, Vigenin said that Bulgaria has to be prepared for the worst and the crisis can only be solved when people could go back their homes.

Vigenin also discussed with Davutoglu the issue of Turkey's EU accession process, emphasizing Bulgaria's support for Turkey's EU membership.
