Pacman champions breast cancer centers

Paolo Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - World boxing idol and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao yesterday pushed for the setting up of breast care centers in every region that would provide information and affordable treatment to breast cancer.

Pacquiao filed House Bill 61, which aims to wage a sustained public information campaign and provide affordable services to fight the disease.

“The cause of breast cancer is multi-factorial and the possibility of cure is high when detected early, hence, public awareness and education is our primary weapon in the fight against the disease and this is where we must focus our efforts,” the boxer-lawmaker said.

He said data from the Department of Health indicate that breast cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide and is the most common among women.

In the Philippines, breast cancer ranks second among the common cancers afflicting both sexes and ranks first among Filipino women.

“Reports even have it that it is highest in the Philippines compared to other Southeast Asian countries,” he added.

Under the bill, breast care centers shall be provided with equipment, tools, implements, devices, apparatus and personnel as may be necessary for them to carry out multiple programs and treatments for the disease.

“These programs include Breast Protection, Breast Surveillance, Breast Imaging, Breast Diagnostics and Surgery, Breast Cancer Chemotherapy and Breast Cancer Awareness and Information,” Pacquiao said.

The measure provides that breast care centers, in coordination with local government units, local health offices, the Philippine Information Agency and other government units, shall spearhead a sustained and extensive information and awareness campaign.
