Trump jinx
Donald Trump’s interest in sports goes way back during his high school days when he played football. Rising as a business tycoon, he promoted boxing matches and once owned a football team in the early 80s of the defunct US Football League, rivaling the National Football league.
A native New Yorker and an avid golfer with multiple world class golf courses, he was frequently seen at Madison Square Garden for New York Knicks games, occasionally seated courtside before he entered politics.
As a sports fan, he’s obsessed with winning and his presence or intervention often spells doom for the team he’s supporting.
Just recently, with USA’s Folarin Balogun’s suspension prior to the game against Belgium, Trump called the condescending FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to review the decision. Long story short, the suspension was overturned with very little explanation, Balogun played like he was not there and the US got eliminated from the World Cup, miserably losing to the fired-up and motivated Belgians, joining co-hosts Canada and Mexico.
A month ago, Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals. His appearance at MSG caused an inconvenience to many with many road closures and tight security measures. Inside the arena, he was booed but downplayed it saying they were actually cheers. At some point, he fell asleep. The Knicks lost that game, snapping a 13-game playoff winning streak. At least the Knicks had two more games to recover compared to the US World Cup team.
A week before the 2026 Super Bowl, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft hang out with Trump. Game time came and when the final whistle was blown, the Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the Seattle Seahawks.
Last February, as a precursor to the Winter Olympics, was the 4 Nations Face-Off involving hockey teams from the US, Canada, Finland and Sweden. In the US-Canada finals, he posted on his Truth Social media platform “to spur them towards victory” and repeating his proposal to annex Canada as the 51st US state. The Americans lost and Canadian leader Justin Trudeau retorted “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”
Trump made history as the first sitting US president to attend an NFL title game when he was at the 2025 Super Bowl, supporting the Kansas City Chiefs, saying Patrick Mahomes has all it takes to win. The Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In September 2025, Trump visited Team USA at the Ryder Cup held at Long Island, New York. The Americans were behind Team Europe and despite a late comeback, Team USA lost. Trump strikes again.
If you have a favorite team and the US president happens to be in attendance, pray that he’ll be supporting the opposing team. Chances are, you’ll win. It’s the Trump jinx.
