Community runs keep thriving in Cebu
CEBU, Philippines — Community runs continue to gain traction among runners in Cebu, serving as a platform to train, connect, and prepare for upcoming races.
A community run is a gathering of runners who come together to participate in group training sessions, which often include endurance runs and running drills aimed at improving performance. These activities help participants enhance their running abilities as they prepare for future road races, and marathons. Beyond training, community runs provide a welcoming environment for individuals who are new to the sport. Beginners are given the opportunity to learn from more experienced runners, making the activity open to people of all fitness levels.
One of the community runs that has become a regular gathering for runners is the ECYY Community Run in Cebu City.
The group is among the pioneers in organizing community runs in the city following the pandemic in 2022, at a time when many individuals were looking for opportunities to return to outdoor activities and reconnect with fellow runners.
Since then, the initiative has steadily attracted participants from various backgrounds, ranging from seasoned athletes to beginners taking their first steps into the sport. Their community runs typically cover distances ranging from 5 to 10 kilometers, cruising through various roads in Cebu City.
Community runs also offer an accessible alternative for individuals who may not have the means to regularly join organized fun runs and road races, which often require registration fees.
Through free group runs, participants can still enjoy the benefits of structured training, gain valuable experience, and become part of a supportive community.
As the popularity of running continues to grow, community runs are expected to play a significant role in encouraging more individuals to embrace the sport and become part of Cebu’s expanding running culture. (Contributed story by John Velez)
