CEBU, Philippines — As part of the month-long activities lined up for its 65th Charter Day celebration this June, the Lapu-Lapu City government is reviving the MUGNA competition.

City officials said the cultural competition will again feature creative street installations from participating barangays, highlighting local heritage, artistry, and community identity.

Preparations for the event were discussed during a coordination meeting led by the City Tourism Office, headed by Gary Lao, attended by barangay officials from both mainland and island villages.

Mayor Cindi King-Chan said the activity aims to strengthen unity among Oponganons while giving communities an opportunity to showcase their culture and traditions through artistic displays.

Under the competition guidelines, 30 barangays are expected to transform selected streets and public spaces into cultural showcases using indigenous, recyclable, and environment-friendly materials.

The city government will also hold seminar-workshops to assist participants in developing their concepts, particularly in the areas of local history, heritage, and design. Each barangay participant will receive a P25,000 subsidy for the preparation of their installations.

Judging will focus on creativity, visual impact, cultural relevance, craftsmanship, sustainability, and cleanliness.

Organizers said all installations must be completed by June 11, while the first and second rounds of judging are scheduled on June 13 and June 16, respectively. The awarding ceremony will be held on June 22.

Cash prizes await the winning barangays, including P100,000 for the champion, P75,000 for second place, and P50,000 for third place. Consolation prizes will also be given to all participants.

Aside from MUGNA, other activities lined up for the Charter Day celebration include the Parade of Flags on June 17 and other civic and cultural events throughout June.

This year’s Charter Day celebration carries the theme, “Celebrating 65 Years of Service and Progress: Empowered by People, United in Purpose.” – MRM (CEBU NEWS)
