2025 US Open facts and figures

FEEL THE GAME - Bobby Motus - The Freeman

After three weeks, the last tennis Grand Slam tournament of the year closed.  Backed by a large relocation of enthusiastic Filipinos, the world saw the first ever full-blooded Pinay advance to the second round of a Grand Slam event.

For the first time since 2002, no member of the Big Three – Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, contested for a major final.   Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, made it to the semis in all the four majors this year without winning any set in all four matches.

Winning his 2nd US Open men’s title, Carlos Alcaraz again conquered New York and returned to number one in the ATP rankings, ending Jannik Sinner’s 65-week reign at the top.  He and Sinner became the first pair to contest 3 Grand Slam finals against each other in the same season.

At 22-years old, Alcaraz won his 6th majors title and is the second youngest male player to reach six titles.  At the age of 18, Bjorn Borg won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open in 1974.  Alcaraz played in his 7th majors final.  He became the fourth singles men’s player in the last 25 years to reach the final without dropping a single set.  First to do it was Lleyton Hewitt (2005), Nadal (2010) and Federer (2015).

Reaching the Open finals this year, Sinner, at 24, became the youngest ever to reach five consecutive Grand Slam finals.  In the Open Era history, only three other players have made the feat.  You guessed it – Nadal, Federer and Djokovic.

Sinner and Alcaraz have combined to win each of the last eight Grand Slam singles titles.  From 2005 to 2007, Nadal and Federer combined for 11 consecutive majors title, the longest streak for the moment.   A classic but friendly rivalry is in the making between these two Europeans, reminiscent of the Federer and Nadal’s rivalry.  In their 15 matches head-to-head so far, Alcaraz leads 10-5 over Sinner.  Tennis media dubbed them as “The New Two”.

Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her US Open title, claiming her fourth majors championship.   She is the first repeat champion at the US Open woman since Serena Williams won three in a row in 2012, 2014 and 2014.

Sabalenka is also the first woman since Serena in 2016 to reach three finals in a Grand Slam calendar.  She retains the number 1 ranking in the WTA and is on her 55th week and with her fourth title, she’s now tied with Naomi Osaka at 3rd in the WTA’s active Grand Slam titles list.
