Chevron Houston marathon

SPORTS EYE - Raffy Uytiepo - The Freeman

My in-laws have been living in Houston, Texas for over three decades and always invite me to visit and run the Chevron Houston Marathon. I’ve been attempting to run in Houston but the race is held every second week of January, conflict to the many festivals in the Visayas, the Ati-Atihan in Aklan, Sinulog in Cebu and Dinagyang in Iloilo. Former president George W. Bush ran the Houston’s Marathon in 1993 in 3:44. Houstons route is quite flat compared to Boston or New York. Anyway, here’s the results of last week’s marathon. James Nganda proved that the Kenyans are not ready to surrender the title “Kings of the Road”, when he won in 2:11:03. Baharain’s Abdi Abdo was second in 2:11:11 while Nganda’s compatriot, Elisha Barro settled for third in 2:11:16. Japanese Ken Uchida was fourth in 2:11:19. Defending champion Kelkile Gezahegen came in fifth in 2:11:20 with American  Frank Lara pocketing sixth in 2:11:32.

Womens Division

Kiera D’ Amato became the first American woman to win the race since Kelly Keane in 2005. The 37-year old, clocked 2:19:03. Alice Wright of Great Britain was runner-up in 2:29:08 with former 3,000m NCAA champion Maggie Montoyo pocketing third also in 2:29:08. Another American Robert Grower, finished fourth in 2:32:02 with Atsede Tesema of Ethiopia placing fifth in 2:32:38.

Aramco half marathon

Meanwhile, in the Houston Aramco Marathon, Ethiopia’s Milkesa Tolosa reigned supreme in 1:00:24 while Kenya’s John Korir and Great Britain’s Wilfred Kimitei were second and third respectively in 1:00:27 and 1:00:47.  American Kirubel Erassa was fourth also in 1:00:44.  Shadrack Kimining of Kenya wound up fifth in 1:00:53. Patrick Tiernan clocked 1:00:55 to place sixth.

Sara breaks record

It was a record-breaking day for Americans as Sara Hall came in second to Kenya’s Vicoty Chepngeno, clocking 2:07:15 to break Molly Huddle’s mark of 1:07:25 set in 2018. Chepngeno timed 1:05:03 as she registered the fastest half marathon on American soil. Dominique Scott (RSA) was third in 1:07:32 with Finona O’Keeffe finishing fourth in 1:07:42. Jessica Judd of Great Britain was fifth in 1:07:52 while Emily Durgin of the USA grabbed sixth place in 1:07:54.
