UV athletes stamp classes in PRISAA National Games
CEBU, Philippines — The University of the Visayas (UV) athletes, fighting under the banner of Central Visayas, made waves on various front in last week’s 2019 Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games staged in Davao City.
The Visayanians were of big help as Central Visayas accomplished a rare four straight overall championship in the seniors division of the annual sports conclave with an overwhelming total of 243 medals sliced into 100 golds, 84 silvers and 59 bronzes.
UV’s top tanker Alfred Latrell scored a golden double via the 400m and 800m freestyle relay in swimming event. He also bagged silver in the 400m individual medley and bronze in the 1,500m freestyle.
In men’s beach volleyball, Raphy Abanto, John Kevin Juban, and Fortunato Libres powered UV to a grandslam feat, while Dan Jay Nietes settled for silver in boxing.
In lawn tennis, Norman Joseph Enriquez produced two golds in singles and team event and a bronze in mixed doubles while Precious Larriz Coderos snared gold in team event and bronze in women’s doubles.
The UV Green Lancers, on the other hand, came up with a silver medal after losing to the taller and bigger CALABARZON by a hairline in their final match. The UV squad is manned by Sheldon Gahi, Ted Saga, Kenneth Brillo, Melvin Botuhan, Jiesel Tarrosa, Michael Maestre, Jancork Cabahug, Froiland Maglasang, Gabriel Cometa, Gileant Delator, Jim Paul Amistoso and Ubert Villaceran.
“We are so grateful to the UV administration and the UV community and alumni as well who are there to support our student-athletes,” said UV Athletic Director Cris Mejarito. “ Inspite of all the trials and challenges, still the UV student-athletes together with the PRISAA-7 delegation claimed the historic four-peat.” EBV
