Cebu School of Chess to hold summer camp

CEBU, Philippines — Aspiring chess players in this side of the country will have a chance to further sharpen their skills in this famous European board game through the Cebu School of Chess Summer Camp 2019 slated from April 1 to May 30 at the Cebu Coliseum.

The two-month camp that is open to both boys and girls of all ages will be spearheaded by Grandmaster candidate Kim Steven Yap.

“I am doing this not only to train kids but also for them to become responsible scholars and future leaders of the society through the values they get out of playing chess,” said Yap.

One of the brightest players Cebu chess has ever produced, Yap founded the Cebu School of Chess in 2014.

He earned his first GM norm after placing second in the Berkeley Chess School 2018 Summer IM/GM Norm Tournament in Berkeley, California.

Yap, who once served as trainer at the ASEAN Chess Academy in Singapore, is currently the coach and trainer of the University of Cebu (UC) chess varsity team.

On May 29, 2015, Yap signed a memorandum of agreement with Dr. Marie Ernestine Fajatin of Marie Ernestine School and Therese dela Torre of Cebu Chess Masters for Marie Ernestine School Philippine Robotics Academy to be the first private school in the country to include chess into its K-12 curriculum.

For his camp, Yap offers a package of P4,500 for the whole camp, P2,800 for one month, P750 for one week, and P180 for one day. He will charge P2,200 for Saturday trainings.

A three-day try-outs on May 28-30 will culminate Yap’s summer clinic. Cash prize and scholarship priviliges will be given to the winners.
