Cebu to host qualifying leg of Philippines scrabble championship
CEBU, Philippines — Cebuano word wizards will have something to look forward to as the Queen City of the South will be hosting the third leg of the 2019 Philippine National Qualifying Scrabble Championship on April 6-7 at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
Spearheaded by the Cebu Scrabble Association (CSA) in association with the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) and the Department of Education-Cebu City Division, the event serves the Philippine qualifiers for the World Scrabble Championship set this October in Goa, India.
The Cebu leg is the only tournament that has three categories - professional, high school and elementary.
“Kita ra diri sa Cebu ang naay three categories kay daghan ta og high school ug elementary players,” said Marilyn Abella of the organizing CSA. Daghan ta og mga maayong scrabble players from elementary and high school who played in the international tournaments already. Daghan ta og potential players from these categories na pwede nato i-compete sa national championship.”
Only the top five players in each division, which will be determined through a ranking system, will be qualified to compete in the national finals in Manila this June.
Aside from the opportunity to compete in Manila, the winners of the Cebu leg will also receive cash prizes. The champion in the professional category will pocket P12,000, while the top player in the high school and elementary divisions will receive P5,000 each.
CSA will be accepting registrants in the second week of March.
