Scores resounding twinkill to rule Milo Little Olympics

CEBU, Philippines — At the conclusion of the three-day competition yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center, the Webmasters assembled 199 points to rule the secondary division and pooled 85 points to beat the field in elementary class of the interschool league which drew over 5,000 student-athletes throughout the Visayas.

UC was successful in dethroning University of San Carlos, which came in second with 126 points, while Abellana National School woundp up third with 104.67 points.

In the elementary, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu settled for second with 69.67 points, while Colegio Del Sto. Niño-Cebu landed at third with 64 points.

It was a sweet victory for the Webmasters as they became the second school to win both elementary and secondary division title next to USC who achieved the feat four years ago. This is also the first time for UC to clinch the elementary crown.

“I was truly amazed. I didn’t expect this,” said UC athletics director Jessica Honoridez. “We were able to get the overall championship because of our faith in God and great efforts from our coaches and athletes.”

“The University did not put pressure us and the athletes, instead we were given genuine support,” Honoridez said. “Angayan ra gyud nga suklian namo ang ilang grabeng suporta kanamo.”

Ten athletes from UC were also named Most Outstanding Athletes including tracksters Martchan Torregosa and Crystal Villanueva, chess player Marphine Faith Mangubat, gymnasts Benedict Kail Soronio and Elijah Miguel Cababan, karatekas  Zaki Louis Bullo and Arianne Caballes, Melanie Galleon, Dominique Henze Lucero and Mikylla Therese Dinavanao of table tennis.

During the final day of the competition, SHS-Ateneo dethroned Bacolod Tay Tung High School, 75-67, in the secondary boys basketball finals, while St. John Institute of Bacolod defeated Tay Tung, 49-41, in the elementary boys finals.

SHS-Ateneo also won the gold medal in the elementary football with a 2-1 victory over Don Bosco Technology College. Liloan National High School-Don Bosco Boys’ Home scored an upset over DBTC, 3-1, to snare the secondary division crown.

USC won the elementary and secondary boys golds in chess, while Tipolo Elementary School prevailed in the girls side. Tisa Elementary School won the elementary boys karatedo, while St. Alphonsus College and Cadiz West Elementary School shone in taekwondo.

Living Stones International School topped the secondary boys volleyball, while Tay Tung ruled the girls division. The young spikers of Colegio del Sto. Niño and Subangdaku Elementary School won their respective divisions in the elementary volleyball.

Milo Sports executive Lester Castillo, for his part, is happy with the turnout of event. “It was very successful.  Many records were broke and we have produced another set of champions,” he said. (FREEMAN)
