Gov. Cup U21 caging kicks off today

CEBU, Philippines - All roads lead to the Cebu Coliseum as the Cebu Governor’s Cup Under-21 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament kicks off today.

No less than Governor Hilario Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale will grace the elaborate opening salvo that will start at 1 pm.

Among the highlights of the affair is the selection of best muse from the South and North division. The top three beauties will receive P10,000, P5,000 and P3,000, respectively, while non winners will get a consolation prize of P1,000.

There will be an exhibition game between the Provincial Board members and mayors from different LGUs after the program.

Cebu Provincial Sports Commission executive director Atty. Ramil Abing promises an exciting opening games. Tudela and Pilar will battle it out in the first game, while Oslob and Samboan will face-off in the second game.

“This tournament is in line with our program to develop the grassroots sports in the entire province. That is why we are moving hard for the municipalities to participate, especially  from the Camotes and Bantayan Islands," said Abing.

All in all, 38 teams from both the North and South divisions will slug it out for supremacy in the P1 million cagefest.

The champion will pocket P500,000, while the runner-up will take home P300,000. The teams that will qualify for the second round will be given incentives of P20,000, P15,000 and P10,000.

Comprising the North division are Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela, Mandaue City, Pilar, Tudela, Carmen, Sogod, Borbon, Tuburan, Asturias, Balamban, Danao City, San Remigio, Medellin, Bogo City, Santa Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos.

Seeing action in the South bracket are Talisay City, Naga City, San Fernando, Sibonga, Argao, Dalaguete, Minglanilla, Alcoy, Boljoon, Oslob, Samboan, Santander, Ginatilan, Alegria, Badian, Alcantara, Dumanjug, Barili and Toledo City. (FREEMAN)
