Carzano dominates Minglanilla chessfest
CEBU, Philippines - Johnny Carzano pulled off a crucial win over Lloyd Sy in the seventh and final round to clinch the title of the 1st Mayor's Cup Chess Tournament last Sunday at the Minglanilla Sports Complex.
Carzano pocketed P3,000 for dominating the tournament for class B players or those with NCFP (National Chess Federation of the Philippines) of 2000 and below with the highest output of 6.5 points.
Bobby Quiros subdued George Villasencio in his last assigment to grab the second place with 6.5 points, while Martin Kwan outsmarted Leo Cortes to settle for third place honors with 5.5 points. Quiros and Kwan got P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, for their efforts.
Placing at joint fourth to ninth spots were Lloyd Sy, Nic Cuizon, Jave Peteros, Hector Villamora, Marionito Abad and Villasensio with 5.0 points, while Eduardo Flores, Junry Siloy, Dennis Gonzales and Junny Approvechado rounded up the top 13 finishers 4.5 points.
After Minglanilla, action shifts to the Knight Attack Chess Cafe in Robinsons Galleria Cebu on March 12 for the 'Little Wesley So Cup,' a 12-Under kiddies tournament organized by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA). (EBV)
