Cebuano karatekas scoop gold medals in Bacolod tourney

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebuano martial artists Gwenjade Ponteros and Nino Kime Avila caught the spotlight as Team ASK claimed the overall championship of the 2016 Bacolod Team K Series Karate Championships in Bacolod City over the weekend.

Ponteros, a University of the Visayas varsity, hauled three golds via the senior division's kumite, 55 kilograms and team kata event.

The 9-year-old Avila of Talisay also won gold in kata of his class.

Since there were only two of them from Cebu, coach Larry Avila decided to include Ponteros and his son Nino in his ASK-Bacolod squad.

With the two Cebuanos in the lineup, ASK-Bacolod went on to bag the overall title with a total of 13 golds, five silvers and four bronzes.  (FREEMAN)
