‘Sikad Sugbu’ reels off today

CEBU, Philippines – Hundreds of pedal-pushers are expected to participate in Cebu City’s ‘share the road’ campaign today dubbed as Sikad Sugbu starting from Lantaw in South Road Properties to Uling, Naga.

Cyclists will be traversing a 52-kilometer route from SRP to Uling, Naga, but there will be no competition involved, while participants will have a get together after at the Lantaw restaurant.

In a press conference yesterday, Cebu City councilor Gerry Carillo said that the purpose of the event is to stir the public’s attention with the implementation of city’s ordinance regarding bike lanes early next year.

There are three areas in Cebu City that have been identified as lanes for bikers namely the road going to Busay, Banawa and F.Llamas to Katipunan in Barangay Labangon.

Carillo a cyling enthusiasts himself said that their goal is to have respect for all individuals using the road as well as to promote safety.

In the long run, they will also include launch bike for tourism campaign. Carillo also mentioned about bike loops for bikers including the South Road Property, Buhisan to Guadalupe and Guadalupe to Kalunasan.Another loop for heritage sites is being studied.

ThreeOfMe's Nino Abarquez and Voltaire Montebon also added that this event is expected to strengthen the bond and camaraderie between local cyclists and triathletes.

Organizers of the event are happy to get a positive response among triathletes, cyclists and runners.

Among the groups which have shown full support include Infinitea Group, Igat and HARD Multisport, Kumbati of Naga and Sugbu Bikers' Club of Boy Rabasol who also led a clean-up drive at the SRP yesterday. (FREEMAN)
