UC, Unit 7 rule Cebu City Olympics

CEBU, Philippines - University of Cebu showed that they are once again emerging as a power-house team after they wield their athletic prowess to dominate the secondary division as Unit 7 topped the elementary in the 25th Cebu City Olympics yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

UC who reclaimed their throne from University of San Carlos tallied a total of 50 golds, 37 silvers and 24 bronze medals.

Considered as the most dominant squad in any multi-sporting events in Cebu, UC bounced back after losing the secondary crown in 2013 and 2014 to USC.

UC ended their campaign with four golds in athletics yesterday. Samantha Gem Limos delivered a gold in the 100m dash with a time of 12.87, while UC also harvested four gold medals in the 4X400m girls relay.

John Marvin Rafols and Jhuvan Jehn Baculot also chipped in one gold medal each via the triple jump events. UC also salvaged two silver medals through chess and basketball boys.

USC got dethroned and settled for second place overall with a total 39 golds, 45 silvers and 38 bronze medals, while Abellana National School who represented Unit 9 ended third bid with 16-13-6 gold-silver-bronze medals.

The University of the Visayas settled for fourth overall with 16 golds, 13 silvers and six bronzes as Unit 6 landed fifth with 13-7-12.

Interestingly, DepEd Cebu City declared a separate champion for CESAFI schools which is UC and ANS claiming the public schools title.

In the elementary level, Unit 7 which is composed of athletes from USC, UV, Cebu Eastern College, Colegio del Sto.Niño, Kiddie Haus,  Ylac,  CIC,  STC, Gualandi-SPED,  Tejero, Carreta, Mercado, Cambinocot, Zapatera, Banilad, Binaliw, Mabili, and Paril reigned supreme in the elementary division.

Unit 7 collected 61 golds, 43 silvers and 43 bronzes. They ended their bid with a gold medal in elementary basketball after USC-BED dumped Salazar College of Science Institute of Technology, 46-20 in their finals.

Meanwhile, Southwestern University scored a back-to-back victory in the secondary girls volleyball after beating USC, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12, 26-24

University of San Jose-Recoletos retained their elementary girls and secondary boys titles.

USJ-R belles upended Saint Theresas College in the finals, while USJ-R defeated University of Southern Philippines Foundation. (FREEMAN)
