USJ-R claims finals berth in CESAFI football

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  University of San Jose-Recoletos defeated the University of the Visayas, 1-0, to virtually assured them of a championship berth in the tertiary football event of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Neil Ryan Minoza delivered the winning goal for the USJ-R with nine minutes left in the game.

The win gave them 14 points and it was all the kicking Jaguars needed for them to get into the final round even if they will lose against the University of Cebu tomorrow.

USJ-R will either be playing against UC or the University of San Carlos in the championship match on October 3.

Meanwhile, UC needs at least a draw with the Jaguars tomorrow to get the second slot after carrying 12 points in the latest tally.

For their part, USC needs to win their final assignment in elimination round against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation and hope that UC losses so they can get the other finals slot.

In the Aznar Coliseum, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu spikers grabbed a straight set win against the University of Cebu, 25-17, 25-16 to keep its semifinal bid in the CESAFI volleyball alive.

SHS-AdC awaits the last three games in the secondary girls division to determine their fate.

Already assured of a semifinal slots are defending champion USJ-R, SWU, and USC. (FREEMAN)
