CEBU, Philippines- A total of P10,000 is at stake for the top perfomers in the August edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) monthly tournament this Sunday at Handuraw Pizza and Restobar along Gorordo Avenue, Cebu City.

The champion in Group A will pocket P1,500, while the second and third placers will receive P1,500 and P1,000, respectively. The top five in Group B will take home P1,500, P1,000, P800, P700 and P500.

The top kiddie and female players, on the other hand, will get a special prize of P500 each.

Aside from cash prizes, the top winners in each group will also advance to the grand finals also known as the 'Battle of Champions' this December at Lola Saling's Seafood Grill and Restaurant in Barangay Casuntingan, Mandaue City.

The earlier qualifiers are Rey Flores, NM Arnold Cadiz, Peterson Sia, Rosendo Yamyamin, Tony Cabibil, Jimmy Ty, Jr., and Carlo Maraat in Group A and Regelito Hortelano, Ruel Hortelano, Jun Kidlat, Elmer Odango, Jojo Paredes, Romy Pialan, and Edwin Cablao in Group B.

The August edition of CEPCA monthly is sponsored by Susan Itaas, the first and only Cebuana Woman National Master. A proud Cepcan, she was a three-time Philippine Team that competed in World Chess Olympiad.

Even if she is now based in New York, USA, Itaas is still actively involved in Cebu chess scene especially in events geared towards the development and promotion of the sport in this side of the archipelago.— EBV (FREEMAN)
