Cebu City tankers sizzle

CEBU, Philippines - Perennial champion Cebu City Niños recovered from a so-so performance in the opening day by dominating seven of the first 15 events in the swimming competition during the second day of the 2015 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association(CVIRAA) Meet at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Michael Ichiro Kong led Cebu City's golden assault in the pool after winning two gold medals in the secondary boys 400m relay with a time of 4:44 and in the 200m butterfly in 2:21.12 clocking.

His teammate Karen Mae Indaya, Maisey Alexine Chi and Razel Cabajar also contributed one gold apiece. Indaya ruled the 400m freestyle with a time of 5:11.60 as Chi won the 100m backstroke, while Cabajar bagged the 200m butterfly gold with 3:02.31.

Cebu City also got two gold medals through the 4X50 medley relay with Kong and Indaya leading the charge. The Niños also registered two bronzes in the elementary department and four silvers and a bronze in the secondary division.

Team Mandaue salvaged one gold through Johann Matthew Tubesa in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:06.85, while Talisay tankers took home two silvers and two bronzes as Tagbilaran finished the day with three bronzes. Dumaguete City only managed to secure a silver and bronze medal.

With Cebu City dominating the secondary department, Talisay City also took command in the elementary class as they sweep five of the six golds available.

Psalm Daniel Aquino had two golds in the 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly as Raven Faith Alcoseba won the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly event.

Charles Lipura also delivered a gold for Talisay in the boys 200m freestyle. Mandaue and Tagbilaran got one gold a piece through the 4X50 medley relay.

Meanwhile at Balamban,  Vincent Villa opens his bid with a gold for Team Cebu City in archery's 30m event.

In athletics, Jan Moses Estrada contributed a gold for Cebu City through shot put event with 11.98m. He also got a silver in the discus throw after his teammate Angel Sicad grabbed the gold.

Nina Marie Antiola and Dane Bacolod had a 1-2 finish in the long jump with Antiola winning the gold with 4.89 m as Bacolod got the silver in 4.49m. Bohol’s Engelbert Avenido also grabbed part of the limelight after winning the secondary boy’s high jump with 1.74m against Cebu City's Stephen Pekit-pekit and Kristian Robledo who ended with a silver and bronze medal respectively.

Mandaue City, on the other hand, added gold  with Rogelio Miguel Tremedal winning the archery’s 40m event.

Host Cebu Province also got another gold in athletics through  Jake Nillama in  elementary boys’ shot put with 8.11m mark. Lapu-Lapu City also got into the medal tally after Lovely Fe Andrin won the secondary girls’ 3,000m run. (FREEMAN)
