Cadiz, Hortelano top CEPCA February tilt

CEBU, Philippines - National Master Arnold Cadiz and Ruel Hortelano topped their respective divisions in the February edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) monthly qualifying tournament at Handuraw Pizza along Gorordo Avenue, this city.

Cadiz dominated the group A battle for higher rated players. He was trailed by Amado Olea as Rosendo Yamyamin settled for third.

Hortelano, on the other hand, lorded it over in group B for average and lower-ranked pawnpushers. Concurrent CEPCA president Jerry Maratas copped the second place honors followed by Elmer Odango.

 Aside from cash prizes, the top two performers also booked tickets to the year-ending grand finals also known as the 'Battle of Champions' this December.

The early qualifiers include Yves Christian Fiel and Felix Shaun Balbona for group A and Regelito Hortelano and Manny Abucay for group B.

CEPCA has implemented the bracketing of participants for the first time to ensure a level playing field that may eventually interest the other Cepcans to join the tournament more often.

Also, the club has revived its "CEPCA Kids Program" wherein children of club members may join the competition. Likewise, they will be classified according to their level of skills. (FREEMAN)
