Lancers maul Webmasters

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers literally played like wounded tigers and used their upset loss three nights ago as their "wake-up" call as they made mincemeat of the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 91-46, in what is by far the most lopsided victory in the 14th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men's basketball tournament last Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Earlier, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles soared past the University of  Southern Philippines (USP-F) Baby Panthers, 78-59.

The huge victory came after the Lancers absorbed a rare season-opening loss to the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT-U) Wildcats, 60-67. More importantly, they have prevented what would have been a woeful 0-2 start, something UV has never experienced in its colorful history.

The Lancers went off to a blistering 30-8 start and despite scoring only seven points in the second period, they were still ahead by a dozen markers at halftime, 37-25.

The closest the Webmasters could come was at 32-42 on a three-point play by Jan Michael Auditor with still 6:49 left in the third quarter as the Lancers, fully-charged after the short break, whipped up a furious offensive storm to tear the game apart with an insurmountable 35-point advantage, 77-44, at the final four-minute mark of the contest.

Four players submitted double figures to underscore UV's balanced offensive. Leonard Santillan scattered 15 points, Alvin Matthew Oche had 14 points, while John Michael Abad and Jan Monic Soliva chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively. (FREEMAN)

In sharp contrast, only Auditor was scoring fairly for UC with 13 markers, way below his 36-point haul when they won in overtime against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars last Saturday.

The scores

UV (91) - Santillan 15, Oche 14, Abad 13, Soliva 10, Perolino 9, Aguirre 7, Arong 6, Segumpan 6, Codilla 5, Octobre 4, Napao 2

UC (46) - Auditor 13, Dacalos 9, Misa 6, Puerto 5, Suelto 4, Tabaquero 3, Villarta 2, Roche 2, Santander 1, Nemil 1

Halftime: 37-25. (GGM)
