USC tops regional tikefest
CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Carlos collected a total of nine golds, four silvers and four bronzes to rule the 2014 Regional Taekwondo Poomsae Championships recently at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.
USC of playing coach Glenn Lava edged out the equally tough Avenger’s Taekwondo Center-SHS-AdC, which landed at second place with a 5-7-7 gold-silver-bronze tally.
The visiting Holy Name University of Bohol ended at close third with a 5-5-7 medal count, while the next three spots were occupied by Hijas de Jesus-Cebu with five golds and a silver, Indiana Aerospace University with 2-6-9 while San Roque Child Development School with 2-2-5.
Among the USC gold medallists were black belter Daniel Estacio under the 14-17 class, yellow belter Shawn Sy (10-13), blue belter Faith Dellera (7-9) class, red belter Juliana Reyes (7-9), and brown belters Xander Palacpac (7-9), Shannen Paran (10-13) and Xandy Alcantara (14-17).
USC also won two golds in the team competition courtesy of Nica Ruaya, Geraldine Urgel and Freya Tura in the red-brown combined advanced class and Xandy Palacpac, Nohea de la Fuente and Benjie Paran in the junior open.
On the other hand, ATC’s gold medallists include Richelle Ng and Maria Fatima Alob.
ATC also won golds in the team event through the efforts of Samantha and Sean Abrigonda and Ashley Deniega in the novice yellow-blue belt action, the Alob black belters Mary Camille, Maria Fatima, and Raymound in the junior division and three other black belters Camille Sevilles and Beatrice and Maria Therese Toring in the senior class.
The other golds went to HNU’s Monique Sarabia, Matt Maputol,Amme Ilido, Archelus Pahang, and Vanz Cabagnot, Toledo Taekwondo Center’s Kate Guilot, SRCDS’ Mark Mabuyo and Darwin Galang, IAU’s Diane Agbay and Allysa Jumapao, Maternelle’s John Soco and Martin Suliva, Mroline’s Gabrielle Tamundo, DBTC’s Rihanna Basibas and Claude Bacalso, Junas’ John Alforque, SHS-Hijas de Jesus’ Jacques and Johann Concepcion and Tina and Crystal dela Torre, Canei’s Amythyst Velasco, De la Torre and Johann Concepcion in the senior pairs.
