Brazil’s wipeout for the record books

Host nations also can be defeated, dominated and embarrassed.  This is football and if some country hosts a tournament of this magnitude, expect the football powers to show their, well, powers.  But world power Brazil beaten?  In Brazil?

Germany, ranked 2nd in the world, methodically trashed the world’s number 3 Brazil in a game that had statisticians busy.  The 1-7 loss was the worst in Brazil’s football history, eclipsing the 0-6 drubbing they got from Uruguay in the Copa America, hold your breath, 94 years ago.

No team has ever scored 7 goals in a WC semis and the 6 goal differential was the biggest semis defeat in a WC.  The 7 goals was the first that Brazil allowed into the net.  They are the second host team to let in 7 goals in a WC match.  In 1954, host Switzerland bowed to Austria 5-7.

Toni Kroos did the fastest brace in World Cup history.  His first half double came in just 69 seconds apart.  The four goals made in a span of six minutes was the fastest four goals in WC history.  This has never been done before.

The five goals in 29 minutes is the fastest ever for a team in World Cup history to reach the figure.  Germany now has the most World Cup goals at 221, one up over Brazil.

Miroslav Klose is now officially the World Cup’s highest goal scorer with a total of 16, overtaking another Brazilian legend, Ronaldo.  Klose scored 5 during the 2002 WC, 5 in 2006 WC, 4 in 2010 WC.  He could still add another goal or two to his present 2014 WC tally of 2 goals.

Thomas Muller is the second German player behind Klose to score five or more goals in 2 different World Cups.

Yesterday, I said whoever wins the GER-BRA match will probably win the WC.  Odds are heavily favoring the Germans to get their fourth World Cup title.
