UC bets continue golden harvest

CEBU, Philippines - After swimming and taekwondo, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters dominated athletics, arnis and table tennis event of the  23rd Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

UC garnered a total of 20 golds, 13 silvers and 14 bronzes in an unofficial medal count in athletics. Organizers of the event though will still be utilizing the points system to determine the top performers overall.

Jrict Ray Talicug led the charge as UC hauled 10 more golds in athletics. After becoming the meet's fastest runner with the time of 11.65 seconds in the secondary boys 100m run, he went on to rule the 400m run in 53.95 seconds.

Doren Romeral got the gold in the secondary girls 100m run in 13.08 seconds. The other gold medal contributors for UC were Ara Arenasa in the javelin throw (26.44m) and  triple jumpers John Marvin Rafols (12.88m) and Jhuvan Jhen Baculot, even as they also snared four golds in relay events.

In arnis, UC collected a total of nine golds, one silver and one bronze in the secondary division, while Guadalupe Elementary School minted three golds, one silver and one bronze,

UC raked in three more gilts in table tennis plus a silver and a bronze. The golds came from Athena Comaingking in the girls singles, and Jeramae Saromines and Lezlie Agbon and Francis Berdebel and Kent Edwin Abellanosa in the doubles.

In the elementary category, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) surged to the top with two golds and a two bronzes. UC got one gold and one bronze, City Central School snared one gold and two silvers, while Pardo got two silvers and one bronze.

In secondary badminton, Southwestern University reigned supreme with three golds, one silver and three bronzes, while the other gold was taken away by UC in the secondary level. The gold medallists were Hannah Tudtud, Anthonne Pete Abellana, Ryan Doromal, Trisha Merced Opon, and Jhunna Francisco from SWU and Fritz Michael Sagaad of  UC.

USC though led in the elementary badminton with two golds from the tandem of Jasmine Benemerito and Chelsea Akiatan and singles player Kathleen Verallo. DBTC grabbed one gold through Russel Siarot in the boys singles as Jane Bajarias and Neil Ardiente of  North District 8 seized the gold in the boys doubles.

In karatedo, USJ-R paced the field three golds, two silvers and three bronzes, while Punta Princesa ES topped the elementary battle with seven golds, five silvers and 10 bronzes.

The amateur boxing competition saw Mabolo National High School winning two golds courtesy of light mosquitoweight Jon Paul John Tanudra and pinweight Hergie Himada. ANS snatched a gold through light flyweight Junreil Jimenez as well as Dr. Emilio Osmeña National High School behind the efforts of light mosquitoweight Nicole James Ramos.

In voleyball, USC had posted a double victory, while Pardo ES ended one gold and one silver.

Pardo defeated USC in the secondary girls finals, 25-12, 25-15, but its boys counterparts bowed to Colegio del Sto Niño, 12-25, 25-10, 25-18.

ANS struck gold in secondary baseball, while Punta Princesa ES lorded it over in the elementary battle.

ANS also claimed sepak takraw gold after surviving a three-set thriller over Inayawan, while the sipa gold was won by Talamban ES at the expense of  DVRMES,19-21,21-13,15-12. (FREEMAN)
