Alphan’s ‘Run for a Scholar’ set Aug. 25 First 50 slots free to senior citizens; Students get 50% discount in entry fee

CEBU, Philippines - Seeing running as a potential way to recruit and help members of their fraternity as well as to promote a healthy lifestyle among their comrades, the Alpha Sigma Phi Philippines International Collegiate Service Organization Inc. will stage their first ever Alphan’s 'Run for a Scholar’ on August 25 at the Terraces grounds of Ayala Center Cebu.

The race, which features the 3K, 6K, 12K and 21K categories, is a fund-raising event for the benefit of underprivileged college students who are members or close relatives of a fraternity member of the Alpha Sigma Phi.

“Through this run, we hope to recruit college students in our fraternity and give them direction in their studies. We want to change the image of fraternities here in the country,” said Alpha Sigma Phi Board of Director for Visayas Antonio Tompar in a press conference yesterday at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

“Aside from that, we also want to accumulate funds to finance the studies of our undergraduate college members or relatives of our members. We are aiming at least 50 scholars for this program," he added.

Aside from Tompar, Alpa Sigma Phi National President Abellano Batocael also graced the formal launching of the event together with the rest of the frat's top officials and race technical director Joel Baring of the Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts.

Close to P60,000 in cash prize will be given away to the top performers in each category. The first 150 finishers of the 21K half-marathon will also receive a specially-designed finisher's medal.

Registration fee is pegged at P400 for the 21K and P300 for the 12K, 6K and 3K inclusive of a singlet and post-race refreshments.

Showing their magnanimous heart, Tompar said they will be giving away 50 slots for free to the first 50 senior citizens who will enlist for the charity run. The 'oldies' who want to avail of the free registration must only bring any valid ID that will prove their age.  Students, for their part, will enjoy a 50 percent discount.

As an added perks, all the participants will have a chance to win exciting prizes from corporate sponsors during the raffle draw.
